Conformable Eyelid Assistive Device

Animated eyelid assistive device in use

For individuals with ptosis, a condition where weakened eyelid muscles make it difficult to open their eyes[1], current assistive tools present a difficult choice. Eyelid crutches and tapes can provide support, but they often restrict the natural, essential motion of blinking. To address this, we've designed a conformable assistive device that provides the necessary lifting force to the eyelid while preserving the freedom to blink naturally.

The device's Kirigami-inspired structure is soft and flexible in its resting state, exerting minimal force and allowing the eyelid to close without interference. When inflated, the structure gently contracts, providing a steady lifting force that helps raise the eyelid and ease the effort of opening the eyes. This innovative design not only assists with vision but also doubles as a rehabilitation tool. By providing gentle resistance during natural blinking, it helps strengthen the eyelid muscles over time, offering both immediate support and long-term therapeutic benefits.
